Visual Poetry
A booming waterfall,
Along this mountain path,
Mocks at the heat.
ARTT 102 Introduction to 2D Design
Assignment Overview:
Japanese haiku is a poetic form that has been practiced for centuries. Many students have learned about this poetic form – with 17 syllable, or more accurately sounds – typically arranged in three lines. Haiku often contains an observation or reference to the seasons through a kigo, a word that may refer directly to a season, or to things or occurrences that are associated with a particular season (for example, cherry blossoms for Spring; dragonflies for Summer; falling leaves for Autumn; mandarin ducks for Winter), and relates that observation to the transience of human experience. These two parts of the poem are typically divided by some kind of break (in Japanese a kireji, or “cutting word”) sometimes, but not always, rendered in English translations by a dash.
